Unlocking Portability: Dashlane Implements FIDO Credential Exchange on Android

Dashlane brings FIDO Credential Exchange to Android, enabling secure, seamless password and passkey portability without risky CSV exports.

At Dashlane, we believe your digital identity should be truly yours—portable, secure, and independent of the platform you use. That’s why we’re proud to announce we’re officially bringing Credential Exchange to Android at the end of February.

Following our successful release on Apple devices, we’re keeping the momentum going. Dashlane is a leading contributor and co-author of the Credential Exchange specifications alongside our peers in the FIDO Alliance, the global standards organization dedicated to reducing the world’s overreliance on passwords.

As one of the first to implement this standard on Android, we’re leading the way toward a more open ecosystem in which your data is never locked into a single provider.

What exactly is Credential Exchange?

If you've ever tried to move your passwords, passkeys, and secure notes from one password manager to another, you know the drill: Export a messy, unencrypted CSV file, pray the formatting doesn’t break, and hope nobody intercepts that plaintext file while it’s sitting in your Downloads folder.

Credential Exchange changes the game. It’s a secure process that allows you to move your vault directly between apps. You get a direct and seamless transfer of data between two apps with no plaintext files, and, most importantly, no headaches.

The secure way to move sensitive data

As we move toward a passwordless future, Credential Exchange becomes even more essential. Because passkeys are cryptographic credentials that protect against phishing attacks, they can’t be moved using a plaintext file. Credential Exchange provides a secure way to move these credentials without compromising their confidentiality.

Built on the FIDO Alliance Credential Exchange specifications, it supports almost everything in your vault—passkeys, credit cards, notes, logins, identity information, and more—to ensure your digital life stays intact wherever you go.

The ecosystem challenge: Leading the way for the industry

Being an early adopter means building the infrastructure before the rest of the world is ready to use it. For a direct transfer to happen, both the "exporter" and "importer" apps need to support Credential Exchange.

While we’ve flipped the switch, many other providers and system-level password managers (like Google Password Manager) are in the process of adopting this new technology.

What this means for you today:

  • Compatibility: If you don't see another password manager as a Credential Exchange option yet, it’s because they haven't implemented the FIDO standard for Android. In that case, you can still use the traditional CSV import method with its known limitations.
  • Advocacy: We’re encouraging all major password managers to adopt these standards.

An exciting new adventure awaits

This launch is about more than a new feature; it’s about a commitment to a more open, secure experience on both iOS and Android.

As we look ahead to broader industry adoption of Credential Exchange, we’ll continue investing in this technology so everyone can benefit from seamless data portability.

The update will begin rolling out to Android devices at the end of February 2026, and we’ll keep you informed as more major password managers come on board. Until then, consider this your first look at the future of data portability.

Stay secure, and stay mobile.
